Berdene du Toit Meet Oom Piet.

We would like you to meet our friend, Oom Piet. He used to live on an empty piece of property in Lynnwood road. After a piece of stale bread for breakfast, he would collect paper and other materials that he could trade for money. As dusk settled over the city of Pretoria, Oom Piet would take his favourite seat on a few stacked bricks on the pavement. From there he could watch the busy Lynnwood traffic and comment on the weather. Oom Piet is an expert when it comes to weather forecasts. We met Oo… Continue

Mynhardt van Pletsen God of this city

Every city exports something. Every town, city, country and culture has something that they uniquely contribute to the global village. Whether that unique contribution is wholly good, or the fact that it might have some sort of dark side, doesn't really negate the fact that there is definitely something special to any geographical area and people group in the world. My wife, Lisha, and I had the amazing opportunity to live and work in the United States for the best part of six months in 2008.… Continue

Warren FAQ's Series - Episode One: Why Question?

Living in a world where religion becomes more and more irrelevant we need to question our traditions, our systems of belief, open up our suitcases, keep what is necessary and throw out the garbage. We need to be able to engage with others who struggle to see or experience God and learn from them as we learn from our wrestling with our Maker. Rob says "A question by its very nature acknowledges you don’t have it all figured out. Questions rooted in humility, whether raw or even blasphemous under… Continue

Saturday 17 October, Soshanguve. Make new friends while you experience township life with someone who will be helping you to learn a bit of Zulu or Sotho. Sit down for a traditional African lunch and learn to talk about pap, marogo and mopani worms in the language of your choice. We will start the morning at 9:00 in Soshanguve where we will be welcomed by our hosts. After an orientation and brief language session with our helpers we will hit the streets of Soshanguve and start greeting people i… Continue

Mynhardt van Pletsen How better to be human

An amazing quote from Andrew Sullivan: “The point of this incarnation of God taking on flesh and blood was not surely to construct a catalog of offenses by which we are to judge our own lives at any moment, to force us to thrash and thrive in a constant ordeal of self-criticism and guilt. The point of God taking on flesh and blood – the point of Christ – is not so we have a new list of ways to feel bad about ourselvesContinue

Mynhardt van Pletsen Being With: how our motivations influence our methods

Our conversation at OMNI this week centered around the overwhelming needs of the world, and how one should go about making a difference in the lives of those with less. I'm becoming increasingly aware of just how much our motivations to act influence the methods we end up using. The why of what we're doing - at the end of the day - ends up informing the how of what we're doing. If you have settled on a reason of why you need to intervene and act in any specific matter, the… Continue

Mynhardt van Pletsen Preaching to the choir

Just read this: "It takes 860 of our current 1800 total volunteers over 3400 hours per week to pull off our 8 Worship Experiences at 3 portable locations every Sunday. The volunteers are the lifeblood of this church." Imagine what could 860 people, expensing 3400 hours of energy, do when applied on mission, in their own contexts, changing their worlds? Imagine a church where there were almost no opp… Continue

OMNI Admin Ezekiel 37 [as paraphrased by Marisa Hofer]

Marisa shared her version of Ezekiel 37 at the OMNI Story Sunday gathering on 9 August 2009... I stood in the middle of a dusty valley, surrounded by very dry bones. Long skeleton fingers inched graspingly along the barren ground in search of a drink that would quench their brittle bodies. The dry bones cracked and moaned in their search, only accomplishing to crash into each other, causing a stifling chalky dust to rise up all around. The thick residue floated up into the heavens where… Continue

Mynhardt van Pletsen Heil Die Harlekyn

Mynhardt van Pletsen Communicating for a change

Tomorrow I'm giving a talk on revolutionary communication, and how our culture has shifted in the past 50 years concerning how people interact with each other and with ideas. What was interesting to learn was just exactly how far we've come in our cultural and economical evolution the past couple of decades. Here's a quick tour back in history: In the 1940-70's, we moved from the fruition of the industrial revolution into a culture and economy that is product driven. Factories w… Continue

Warren Postmodern Churchin' - Loxion Style!

For long I've wondered how the black community of South Africa would adjust to the demand of today's postmodern generation, particularly regarding church and spirituality. So, while many of us think that the traditional Sunday-church-building-attendance way may not be the best way to invite people to connect with God, there might still be another alternative church leaders should consider before tossing out that idea. Three years ago we started a church that met in a bar, and was okay, today I… Continue

Mynhardt van Pletsen A Conversation With Rob Bell [video]

During March 2009 I was part of a research team who traveled to the US to have intentional conversations with American church leaders about spirituality, community and living the Jesus life within their specific contexts. All the conversations were recorded, and I will share them here as they become available. You can also click here to check out my written account of our meeting with Rob Bel… Continue
